Well, it is so late in the new year to be finally posting that!
Why have I been away all this time? Well, I was busy busy busy sewing up some cool Christmas presents. :-) Which I will share with you another day, because I don't have the pictures right now!
Remember the last post I made (long ago...) about my new favorite blog? Well the very next day I found my really new favorite blog. It's called Cooking Traditional Food. And I'm in love with it. Kerry has put together some amazing recipes using ingredients that I use, and has even inspired me to start sprouting wheat again and even start trying to sprout beans! (no success on that front yet...)
Okay, well the best part of it all is that Kerry offers a menu mailer-- a weekly or monthly mailer with a menu, the recipes, a shopping list for all the ingredients you need that week, and a daily guide for notes to write about what you need to do each day. I was really excited about this, because I was struggling so much for the last few months with figuring out what to eat each day, scrambling to make it, just buying whatever at the store and then making meals out of it later,...
I joined her email list just so I could get two free ones (a 'budget" one that's only three dinners per week and centers on less meat, and a "classic" one that provides five dinners per week and meat as the main course more often). I used those two mailers to generate a meal plan for the last week and a half before Christmas. That week and a half was so nice! I knew each day what I was going to cook and I could start it early enough to have dinner at a somewhat reasonable time. :-) Hooray.
Guess what?!!??
Chris gave me a year subscription to the budget menu mailer for Christmas. I was/am SO happy! I have only been using it for a week now, but this week has been so stress free (on the food front-- NOT so much on the children puking front). I printed out the mailer (the budget one comes once a month) and I put it in a binder to keep in the kitchen/dining room so that I can reference what's for dinner and the recipes easily. I have been reviewing it each night before I go to bed so I am prepared for what's ahead the next day! It's been great. THANKS CHRIS YOU ARE THE BEST!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
I will be posting more soon. I have to tell you how my couch recovering project went, tell you about my Christmas sewing project, some coconut flour pancakes I came up with for John, the pickles fermenting on my counter, and a whole bunch of other stuff I took pics of long ago and never told you about.
Love, Janet.
My take on food as I search for the healthiest, most cost-effective way to feed my family.

Anyway, remember last month, when I posted about my food log calendar? Well, I thought I would make a quick list for you again this month.
I'm not going to link to any of these, because that takes forever, and I would rather be writing other posts that I have planned, like what I do with a whole chicken to make it last and last and wring every ounce of goodness out of it. and, also I have a post I want to write and a challenge I want to take that I think would be really good for me but also might make my head explode! Food Log Calendar!
***I typed this post last week sometime, and I was going to add links to all the recipes that I have used or posted on this site already, but now I realize that it is just unrealistic for me to find the time! So, if you find a recipe you are curious about, email me and I will send you the link, if I can. :-) ***
I can't believe the month of January is over. It's crazy.
Anyway, I shared last week about how I keep a food log calendar. It's the best. I love it because I can reference it so easily to see what we have eaten recently. And when I'm having a bad day-- thinking about how I can't feed my family good food, I'm not good at this, I'm not equipped for this, or I don't feel like making dinner tonight!-- I can glance at my calendar and at least feel a little better.
I took a picture of my calendar to show you all, now that January is complete! Then I thought, you might want to know what it says. So I thought I would make a list for you too. :-) If you want to steal ideas, or if you're curious what we eat, check it out! Or, if you just don't care, you can skip the list too! :-P

Food Log-- 6.4.11
Breakfast: Oatmeal strawberry chocolate chip pancakes (vegan because I didn't have eggs so I used flax instead!), kids had bananas before the pancakes were ready
Snack: Leftover homemade pitas, gluten free pumpkin muffins from a yard sale (Kids had a snack)
Lunch: Split Pea burgers, leftover Hummus with veggies, cantaloupe
Dinner: Spaghetti with homemade sauce and artichokes with garlic butter
We had a great day! It was so nice outside. We went to the West Chester Grower's Market only to discover we didn't have any cash. Ha! ANYway, we also ended up at a yard sale and got some pretty great stuff-- still no cash, but luckily we got it on credit! (Love going to friends' yard sales!) And there were gluten-free pumpkin muffins for sale, and we actually found enough for the kids to each get one! Yum!
No sign of the groundhog so far today! Let's hope he stays away-- we are getting a bigger trap tomorrow. :-)

Food Log-- 6.3.11
Breakfast: Oatmeal with strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, sucanat, and cashews, hemp seeds, sesame seeds, and rice milk on top
Snack: Kids had pears
Lunch: Split Pea burgers on homemade whole wheat buns, deviled eggs, red pepper strips, graham crackers (I had a LARGE handful of graham cracker pieces....)
Dinner: Hummus, homemade pitas, carrots, red peppers and snap peas, raw chocolate covered cookie dough balls for dessert
In doing this, I realize we have eaten a lot of red peppers in the last three days! Well, they are almost gone and I will have to resort to all the other veggies in our fridge. I just love red peppers!
No food picture today, but a food preservation picture instead... well, hopefully it will act as one!
Take THAT, groundhog! (Who ate MORE of my broccoli today.... good thing the packet spilled while I was planting them and we ended up with many more than planned... but we don't have enough to keep this rate of eating up for long.)

I'm so lucky to have a good-cooker-guy as my husband!
